“I see a Black girl with box braids camped determinedly in an aisle. Staring in annoyance or camaraderie, people step over the array of books she has gathered. Even with the discount, she will only be able to afford one book. If she buys the one book, she can walk across the street and buy a coffee (because the price of coffee in New York isn’t a joke yet). Between the coffee and the book, over which she will dream and scribble, the kindness of a bookstore becomes fused to the part of New York she will always consider invaluable.”
